HPLC evaporative light scattering detectors are used to detect and quantify compounds that lack suitable chromophores or otherwise have low UV absorbance. To achieve this analysis, an HPLC ELSD detector converts the sample eluting from an HPLC column into a fine aerosol using a nebulizer and an inert carrier gas such as nitrogen and then heats the nebulized sample to evaporate the mobile phase solvent. The resulting solid particles are then quantified by concentrating a light source on them and analyzing the scattered light which provides a signal proportional to the analyte concentration. Often considered one of the most universal detectors available for HPLC analysis, ELSD detectors are commonly used to analyze drug molecules, polymers, lipids, and various other compounds. Some key specs to consider when comparing HPLC ELSD detectors are the sensitivity, dynamic range, response time, and linearity it provides. Also, be sure to consider the various interfacing and data-handling options that are available.
