HPLC fluorescence (FL) detectors are known for their high sensitivity and specificity over other types of HPLC detectors. FL detectors measure light emission from excited atoms in an analyte in order to obtain information from a solution that has been collected from an HPLC column. While many compounds have natural fluorescence, those solutions that do not can still be measured in this manner by adding a fluorescence derivative. FL detectors are useful for analysis of pharmaceuticals, natural products, clinical samples, and petroleum products.
