Clinical Chemistry Controls

Used to monitor the precision of chemistry assays and instruments, clinical chemistry controls are available in assayed and unassayed versions and in liquid or lyophilized format to suit each laboratory’s requirements. Dedicated chemistry controls for clinical analytes include creatinine, microalbumin, ammonia/ethanol, glycerol, and bilirubin for pediatric testing. Comprehensive controls with target values that can exceed 100 parameters may include proteins, lipids, cardiac markers, therapeutic drugs, immunoassays, routine chemistries, and trace metals. Chemistry controls can be human serum based or bovine based (for veterinary tests such as bile acids and lactate).

What to Consider When Choosing Clinical Chemistry Controls

Although controls are often usable on a wide range of clinical chemistry instruments, look for instrument-specific target ranges for the analyzer you will be using. Check out the product’s shelf life and open- and closed-vial stability as well.
