Unlike surface profilometers or a stylus profilometer, optical profilometers (also referred to as laser profilometers) are non-contact instruments used for surface texture analysis to provide similar information. A laser profilometer can be used to measure wear analysis, fingerprint materials processing, and surface finish on many surfaces, such as paper, plastic, epoxies, metals, glass, paint, and ink. A clear advantage of optical profilometers is speed. Scan speeds are not restricted to contacting the surface rather by the light reflected from the surface. Other advantages include less surface wear and required maintenance.
