An x-ray microscope or x-ray fluorescence microscopy combines microscopy analysis and elemental analysis into one system. X-ray microscopes and XRF analyzers are used for elemental and chemical analysis for metals, glass, ceramics, forensics, and environmental testing. As a sample is rapidly scanned by an X-ray beam the sample is excited with high-energy X-rays, which allows spectra to be measured to generate an element image. Depending on the type of XRF analyzer used, multiple elements can be imaged at one time. Element measurement range can vary between models.
