Immunology Controls

By monitoring serum protein and serology testing procedures, immunology controls improve the quality of patient results while ensuring uniformity within the laboratory and between different labs. Hospitals, research labs, and reference labs make use of immunology controls in areas including flow cytometry, immunophenotyping, and IFA procedures.

How Do I Choose an Immunology Control?

Immunology controls may be assayed or unassayed, and come in levels 1, 2, and 3, as well as multiple-level kits. Human-serum-based, liquid, ready-to-use formats are most common, with typical vial sizes of 1 mL and 3 mL. Types of immunology controls include ANA with centromere, homogenous, mitotic spindle, and speckled staining patterns; anti-DNA; elevated CRP; and spinal fluid. Comprehensive immunology controls may cover several dozen analytes, including immunoglobulin M, prealbumin, and rheumatoid factor.
