Urine Controls

Urinalysis controls verify the precision of dipstick testing procedures and microscopic testing. Urine chemistry controls often have a multianalyte range, including pregnancy markers and microalbumin, and enable both general and specific urine chemistry testing methods to be evaluated. Urine quality controls come in dipsticks, dropper bottles (some for use with reagent pads), and centrifuge tubes. Bilevel tests include level 1 and 2 controls to verify that normal and abnormal results can be detected. Multiparameter tests (for example, 12, 18, or 24 assayed target values) enable consolidation and cost savings. Common parameters include albumin, bilirubin, glucose, hemoglobin, hCG, and protein. Liquid, ready-to-use controls eliminate pipetting issues.

What are Some Questions to Consider When Choosing Urine Controls?

  • How many tests can you get out of each package?
  • Is the urine control compatible with your chemistry analyzer or manual procedure?
  • What is the control’s relative stability?
