Cryopreservation is the preservation of living and structurally intact cells and tissues by cooling to very low temperatures (as low as -196°C). A key challenge facing cryopreservation research is intracellular ice formation (IIF), which damages cells and is the primary cause of death of cells cryopreserved in solution.
