MEQ is a cell membrane impermeable chloride indicator. It can be reduced to create the cell-permeant dihydro-MEQ (DiH-MEQ) which can be passively loaded into cells and subsequently oxidized to the chloride-sensitive MEQ. Used to monitor changes in chloride in brain slices and measure GABA receptor activity
