New FDA-Cleared Sensititre® OptiRead Automated Fluorometric Plate Reading System Provides Fast, Accurate MIC Plate Reads for Microbiology Laboratories

CLEVELAND, Ohio (November 08, 2011) – Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, today announced FDA clearance of its new Thermo Scientific Sensititre OptiRead Automated Fluorometric Plate Reading System for use with Sensititre microtitre plates. Combining fluorescence technology with the powerful SWIN® Software System, the OptiRead quickly and accurately reads MIC plates, maximizing consistency and eliminating manual reading.

The new Thermo Scientific Sensititre OptiRead Automated Fluorometric Plate Reading System for use with Sensititre microtitre plates, has just received FDA clearance.

The OptiRead provides user-friendly automation for busy laboratorians, rapidly transferring test results for processing, interpretation and report generation, and improving efficiency and productivity. Its compact design conserves valuable laboratory space, operating as either a standalone instrument, or in combination with the fully automated ARIS2X reading and incubation system, replacing the current AutoReader instrument.

“Obtaining timely results without sacrificing reliability is critically important to laboratorians,” said Cara Bastulli, product manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “With that in mind, the OptiRead was designed to automatically deliver precise, fluorometric readings of 96 well microtitre plates in just 13 seconds, making it one of the fastest commercially marketed instruments of its kind. And with SWIN LIS connectivity, actionable results are delivered to clinicians, facilitating treatment decisions, for better patient care.”

In addition to FDA clearance for in vitro diagnostics use in U.S. clinical laboratories, the OptiRead System is also CE/IVD-marked for sale outside of the U.S.

About the Sensititre Product Line
The Thermo Scientific Sensititre product line for susceptibility and identification testing enables labs to utilize more FDA-cleared antimicrobics than on any other automated platform against the widest range of non-fastidious and fastidious bacteria and yeasts. Available in a wide variety of formats, Sensititre allows you to eliminate supplementary offline tests while meeting CLSI and EUCAST breakpoint requirements. The platform is also the system-of-choice for global surveillance initiatives, including NARMS (National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System).

The Thermo Scientific brand offers a full range of standard and custom Sensititre plates featuring 18- to 24-hour incubation, true MIC results, and on-scale QC ranges, making susceptibility testing a viable procedure for virtually any size laboratory. For custom dried or reference-method plates, laboratories can specify format and antimicrobic concentrations, selecting from more than 240 agents, including 80+ cleared compounds, to create a plate best-suited for the lab’s particular need. Small minimum order quantities allow for better cost and inventory control.
