Microbial Identification System

Microbial identification systems play an important role in environmental monitoring, contamination investigation, and cleanroom control by identifying potentially harmful bacteria, yeast, and fungi. Levels of automation for microbial identification systems range from manual procedures to fully automated instruments; depending on the application, organisms can be identified in great detail or only to the genus level. Accurate ID is ensured using genotypic methods such as 16S rDNA sequencing, PCR amplification, and phenotypic and proteotypic methods; additional technologies include GC, FTIR, and MALDI-TOF MS. Healthcare environments, clinical labs, forensics, and the cosmetics, food testing, and pharmaceuticals industries are application areas.

Throughput level is a key parameter (compare the number of genotypes per 24-hr period, for example), as is the size of the database. Even more important, however, is the database’s range: The collection of strains and species must accurately reflect your specific microbial ID requirements.
