Forensic firearm examination is a process in forensic science in which specialists attempt to link bullets and weapons to individuals by use of fingerprint recovery, serial number recovery, and physical examination of the weapon components such as the bullets and cartridges found at the scene. This ballistic identification is done by examining characteristics of firearms and their ballistics. This includes examining the striations and other marks left on bullets from exiting the barrel of a gun and the microscopic striations left in the barrel itself using a form of toolmark analysis.
