Deionized water, also referred to as DI water or grade 1, is water that has been purified of virtually of its mineral ions through the use of uniquely manufactured ion-exchange filters in accordance with ASTM D1193. In some cases, this method may be used in combination with reverse osmosis (RO) to raise the level of purity. There are different types of deionization processes which are determined primarily by the type of resin used – cation or anion. Deionized water systems play key roles in numerous forms of laboratory testing as well as in industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. The type and scale of the system can vary significantly depending on the desired applications.
