A total organic carbon analyzer (also referred to as TOC analyzers) measures the amount of total organic carbon present in a liquid or water sample. TOC detection is important because of the effects that TOCs may have on health, not to mention the environmental effects and implications for the pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Since all total organic carbon analyzers only measure total carbon, a TOC analyzer always requires some accounting for the inorganic carbon (IC) that is always present.
TOC analyzers, including a portable TOC analyzer, utilize the same basic technique where acid is added to the liquid sample to remove IC. At this point, the IC is converted into carbon dioxide gas. It is then stripped out of the liquid by a carrier gas where the remaining inorganic carbon-free sample is then oxidized and the carbon dioxide generated from the oxidation process is directly related to the TOC total organic carbon in the sample. There are several methods for introducing the sample to TOC analyzers, including using a syringe, autosampler, and loop sampling. An important specification for total organic carbon analyzers is the measuring range. Carrier gas flow rate, average analysis time and process temperature are important as well for total organic carbon analysis.

Advanced Shimadzu’s highly advanced on-line TOC-4200 analyzer excels in a wide range of water analysis applications, from continuous monitoring of plant/boiler water and management of wastewater treatment plant influent and effluent to management of the water in manufacturing processes. Advanced functionality and communication methods, enhanced data handling, and low maintenance and running costs make this an ideal system for numerous applications. The TOC-4200 utilizes Shimadzu's proven, industry-standard 680 C combustion catalytic oxidation method to support analyses from 5 mgC/L to 20,000 mgC/L full-scale. With a high-sensitivity kit, the TOC-4200 can measure samples with TOC concentrations from 0 to 1mgC/L, such as underground water, public drinking water, or recovered deionized water from semiconductor manufacturing.
Features - Multiple pretreatment units to best match a sample’s characteristics
- Multi-functional sample injector – allows for a multipoint calibration curve from a single high standard
- Carrier gas purification function
- High-salt sample combustion tube kit – increases the period between maintenance by a factor of 10
- On-board air purifier
- Touch-screen LCD
The TOC-4200 offers an ECO mode that reduces waste by only using carrier gas and operating the sampling pump when it is needed. In addition, a web-based monitoring function allows users to monitor data and status from any network-connected computer, while a notification system alerts users when reagent or consumable replacement periods approach.... While providing an ultra-wide range of 4 µg/L to 30,000 mg/L, these analyzers boast a detection limit of 4 µg/L through coordination with NDIR. This is the highest level of detection sensitivity available with the combustion catalytic oxidation method. In addition, the combustion catalytic oxidation method makes it possible to efficiently oxidize not only easily-decomposed, low-molecular-weight organic compounds, but also hard-to-decompose insoluble and macromolecular organic compounds.
Features - Capable of TC, IC, TOC (= TC-IC), and NPOC measurement; options enable POC (volatile organic carbon), TOC via POC + NPOC, and even TN (total nitrogen) measurements
- The blank check function evaluates system blanks by measuring ultrapure water processed automatically within the instrument
- The automatic dilution function enables measurements up to 30,000 mg/L
- Automatic sample acidification and sparging
- The automatic dilution function reduces sample salinity, acidity, and alkalinity, significantly extending the period of use of catalysts and combustion tubes (The period of use depends on the sample and measurement conditions.)
- Stat or priority samples can be added at any time to the analysis schedule without interrupting operation even when an autosampler is used
Control software provided as standard with PC-controlled models provides excellent operability and a wealth of functions to fully support analysis work. In addition, security and integrity are maintained, protecting valuable customer data and helping to enable compatibility with electronic records/electronic signature regulations....
