Multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) is a chromatography method used to separate complex samples, especially those with components that have similar retention factors, by running the eluent through two or more columns instead of the customary single column. MDGC equipment can be found in chemistry, environmental science, and industrial labs and is particularly known for its applications in fragrance and flavor sciences.
There are two techniques for performing MDGC. In the traditional heart-cutting method all components pass through a first column and portions that were not adequately separated will be “heart-cut” out of the first column to be passed through a second column for further separation. While the heart-cutting technique is still a widely used method, for separations that require a higher degree of accuracy, another technique called GCxGC is often used. The GCxGC method differs from heart-cutting in that the entire eluent is passed through both columns. In the first column, the eluent is bunched into discrete fractions by a modulator, then each discrete fraction is released one at a time into a second column where further separation is achieved. The modulator considered by many to be the most important part of a GCxGC system.

Multi-Dimensional GC/GCMS System:
A multi-dimensional GC/GCMS system performs separation using two columns that have different characteristics. The system has a mechanism in which the components that are insufficiently separated in the first column they pass through (the "1st column") are introduced ("heart-cut") to a second, different column (the "2nd column"). This enables analysis with a level of separation that cannot be attained in conventional single-column analysis.
Outstanding retention time stability :
In the past, samples have been introduced to columns using the switching mechanism known as Deans-switching. However, this system results in such problems as a reduced recovery rate and fluctuations in the retention time.
The MDGC/GCMS-2010 system incorporates multi-Deans switching, a new mechanism that significantly reduces the likelihood of fluctuations in the retention times of eluted components, even if switching is performed several times.
A Wide Variety of Optional Systems :
In addition to GCMS, various other detectors, such as an FID or FPD, can be used with the MDGC/GCMS-2010. For example, a headspace sampler and thermal desorption system can be connected and controlled as a pretreatment system. When not using the MDGC/GCMS-2010 as an MDGC system, it is possible to use the GC and GCMS components as independent systems by changing the column and detector connections.

The QP2010Ultra is the only quadrupole mass spectrometer on the market that scans fast enough to fully characterize the 100msec to 600msec peaks created by the modulation process. More economically priced than a TOF-MS, the quadrupole-MS has the added capability of Chemical Ionization and Negative Chemical Ionization for molecular ion spectral analysis and electrophyllic compound selectivity. The spectra generated by quad-MS are easily matched by the standard commercially available libraries such as the NIST, Wiley and FFNSC.
This system is available in a variety of configurations for complete control of your analysis. A second, full function, GC oven, with heated transfer line, can be added to the GCMS system that will allow separate temperature control of the first and second dimensional columns. It is also possible to incorporate our line of Advanced Capillary Flow products such as detector splitting packages, deans switching and backflush kits.
