DSC sample preparation is a critical step to improve the accuracy of your differential scanning calorimetry analysis. DSC samples are typically weighed into crucibles or pans before being placed into a crucible press to seal the lid, this allows for powder, liquid, or solid sample types. DSC sample preparation often involves cutting a material to an appropriate size for analysis, this can be accomplished with handheld sample cutters but automated sample cutters are available and offer reduced sample variability and an increase in analysis throughput. Another commonly used item is an antistatic crucible box that allows for simpler DSC sample preparation and storage. Until now, the preparation of sample pans for DSC had been rather cumbersome. Pans and lids had only been available packaged in bulk form in plastic containers. The plastic packaging containing the Al pans would become statically charged and adhere to one another, sometimes becoming very difficult to separate. Such static charge can also provide a favorable environment for contamination of the sample pan. Additionally, if the packaging lid was closed carelessly, the crucibles and lids might become deformed and thus rendered useless.
A unique approach in the packaging of sample pans now allows for a more efficient process during sample preparation. The new 3in1 Box contains 96 crucibles or lids, neatly sorted in an anti-static plastic box. This pre-sorted arrangement and the anti-static material allows for individual pans and lids to be easily withdrawn from the box. An added feature is the “Sample Identification Card” included in the box which allows for the documentation of samples and measurement results. The compact 3in1 Box is thus an easy-to-handle storage unit for pans and lids with additional benefits in both transport and archiving.
The new Concavus pan
The slightly concave bottom geometry of the Concavus pan always creates a precisely defined contact surface between the sample, pan bottom and sensor, significantly increasing the reproducibility of the measurement results. The patent-pending design of the Concavus pan improves the reproducibility of all DSC measurements; it can therefore be used for the DSC 200 F3 Maia®, DSC 204 F1 Phoenix® and other heat-flux DSCs available on the market.
