A homogenizer will typically be mechanical in design, with some having ultrasonic capabilities as well. A mechanical homogenizer applying rotational shear forces can achieve maximum rotational speeds of 35,000 rpms, and test a wide sample-size range as wide as 0.03 mL to 40 L. Precision computer control technology allows some mechanical homogenizers to be operated from a laptop PC, and offer speed adjustments in increments of hundreds of rpms.

Up to 20 samples can be processed in one run, include two rinse positions, or set up for every other position to be a rinse position. Typical run time for 20 samples is under 10 minutes.
