Homogenizers are used to break particles into smaller constituent parts. Homogenization allows samples that would not naturally be miscible due to differences in particle size and make-up to combine with each other. For a homogenizer, “shear” refers to the phenomenon of one area of fluid traveling with a different velocity relative to surrounding fluid. High shear homogenizers break particles into smaller sizes than standard instruments and are most useful for creating emulsions and suspensions. When choosing a high-shear homogenizer, it is important to consider the speed of homogenization, sample volume, and level of automation.
