A microplate stacker/ microplate handler is an accessory available to automate processes such as cleaning, moving, and analyzing microplates. With compatibility for microplate washers and analysis instruments, a microplate stacker can automate the handling of microplates and microplate readers reducing the risk of error while increasing laboratory throughput. When comparing the various microplate stacker and microplate handler options, consider the type and configuration of your microplates, many microplate handlers are capable of processing microplate tubes, as well as most standard-sized multiwell plates. Microplate handlers are also available in various sizes to accommodate up to hundreds of microplates simultaneously with transfer times commonly under 20 seconds to increase your laboratory throughput and scalability. For an all-in-one high throughput approach to increase laboratory automation, consider a microplate handler workstation that has capabilities such as sealing, labeling, washing, and prepping your microplates for analysis.

Achieving higher throughput in laboratory experiments depends on the ability to easily process batches of microplates. Historically, joining off-the-shelf components together has made for expensive, difficult-to-use, and error-prone integrations. To address these issues, Molecular Devices leveraged its 20 years of experience with the automation industry to develop the StakMax Microplate Handling System to provide dedicated benchtop automation for batches of up to 50 microplates, in a small footprint.
Integration of a StakMax System with Molecular Devices microplate reader is a straightforward process and can be completed in less than 15 minutes, including alignment. Integration with an AquaMax Microplate Washer can be completed in 5 minutes, with no alignment necessary.
Once integrated to a Molecular Devices microplate reader, the StakMax System is operated through Molecular Devices' industry-leading SoftMax® Pro Data Acquisition & Analysis Software providing a common interface for operating both the reader and stacker, avoiding problems with communication hand-offs.
When integrated to an AquaMax Microplate Washer, all programming and operation is handled by the AquaMax Microplate Washer programming touch screen. No external computer is necessary.
Features - Unified Stacker Platform
- Easy to Program and Operate

The system comes with a single plate loading adapter and a choice of magazines for 20, 40 or 50 SBS-standard 96- and 384-well microplates, and barcode reading. All integration tools provided are easy to set up for each configuration.
Simple to use - All the tools necessary for setup are standard, including a software calibration procedure. The entire setup process takes about 15 minutes and, once the system is aligned, it is ready to operate.
Flexible operation - When integrated with the AquaMax® Washer, a batch of 20 ELISA microplates can be processed in as little as 13 minutes. Plates can be restacked to the input stack when a batch is completed, for further processing.
Minimal plate movement - The stacker is designed to minimize plate movement time, while handling the microplates gently, eliminating liquid spillage.
Barcode reading - A barcode reader accessory can be purchased with the system or added later and is easily installed onsite. The barcode reader can be configured to read either the short or long side of the microplate.
Other features and benefits include: - Program with ease
- Create custom automatic scripts
- Enable barcode identification
