Thermomechanical Analyzer (TMA Analyzer)

Thermomechanical analyzers (TMA analyzers) are used to study stress generated by a material subjected to a controlled increase in temperature. Types of stress generated can include expansion, compression, tension, or degree of bending. These analyzers are useful for mechanical analysis of materials including glass, polymers, metals, and ceramics.

A typical thermomechanical analyzer consists of a sample chamber surrounded by a furnace. Sample deformation can be measured with a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) detector and specialized probes are used to measure thermal expansion (CTE), penetration, and tension. Considerations for purchasing a thermomechanical analyzer include the instrument’s temperature range, sample dimensions, suitability for specific sample types and measurements, and ease of use.
