Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (APCI MS)

Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometers (APCI-MS) are used to analyze small, non-polar to medium polarity, organic molecules by medical, environmental, food safety, research, and manufacturing laboratories. When using APCI-MS, a liquid sample and the mobile phase are dissolved in a heated tube until they are gaseous and then sprayed so that ionization can occur. Ionization happens because of proton transfers between the mobile phase and the sample, and once it has occurred, the sample can be analyzed by the mass spectrometer.

Considerations for purchasing an Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer

When choosing an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometer, keep in mind the features needed by your lab. Speed of testing, sensitivity of detection, gases used, ability to run other types of mass spectrometry, and the amount of data that can be stored are some of the features that differ between machines.
