2-Mercaptoethanol is a reducing agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology experiments like SDS-PAGE and RNA isolation. In SDS-PAGE it is used in cell lysis buffer for breaking disulfide bonds and can be sometimes replaced by a less toxic dithiothritol (DTT). In RNA extraction, it denatures RNAse to protect RNA integrity. This Gibco 2-Mercaptoethanol can be stored in 4 deg. and used for up to 3 years.
