DMEM, low glucose, pyruvate, no glutamine, no phenol red
I have been using this DMEM for the fibroblasts culture because it has been reported that phenol red can cause disturbances during the assays. All I had to add was antibiotics (Penicillin/Streptomycin) and fetal bovine serum. For this study, I had fibroblasts from controls and from patients suffering from calcifying disease. The use of this media allowed a good proliferation and it dit not affect in any case the assays as the patient's fibroblasts did show phenotypic characteristics different from the controls. I fully recommend it!
