Very Useful Water Bath Sonicator for Diverse Applications

The VWR brand ultrasonic water bath (or water bath sonicator) is a very versatile tool used by many members of our lab. A prime use of this sonicator is for lysis of bacterial or mammalian cells in large amounts for protein purification. The sonicator is also used for homogenizing suspensions and dissolving compounds which have poor solubility in solutions. We have also used it for degassing solutions before downstream use in FPLCs. This water bath sonicator comes with a timer which is helpful but no settings to control the untrasonic wave frequencies. Lastly, it has some advantages over the probe based sonicator as there is very little risk of contamination, as the water does not come in contact with your sample at all (as opposed to the probe sonicator which needs to be inserted into your sample).
