FD-NIR Improves Functionality of Neuroimaging

Utilizing functional near-infrared spectroscopy, or fNIRS, researchers were able to show significant improvements in functionality when imaging the brain. Known benefits of fNIRS include cost-effectiveness and non-invasiveness when applied to neural imaging.

The researchers used frequency domains (FD), as opposed to NIR light, to layer overlapping measurements of neural tissue. Results showed a greater image resolution within deeper layers of the brain. FD-NIRS has shown previous functionality in brain and joint trauma evaluations. This research marks the first time a comparison between FD-NIR and CW-NIR has been conducted in brain imaging analysis.
