Soxhlet Extractor

Soxhlet extractors are widely used to extract semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) from solid samples and are a key component in many US EPA testing methods. Soxhlet apparatuses are comprised of a condenser, extraction thimble, and a distillation flask or percolator to hold the solvent. To complete the extraction, the sample is loaded into a thimble before being placed into the soxhlet apparatus where the solvent is refluxed until extraction is complete. Soxhlet extractions can vary in duration depending on the sample however, most extractions are completed within 12-24 hours. Modern soxhlet extractors are designed to accommodate several soxhlet apparatuses to perform numerous extractions simultaneously and typically employ a water bath as the heat source to provide an even, gentle heat to accommodate even the most delicate samples. When comparing soxhlet extractors be sure to consider key specs such as the volume, temperature range, number of positions, and even the dimensions if lab space is limited.
