Laboratory Sterilization Equipment

Laboratory Sterilization Equipment

Keeping Sample Contamination at Bay

A sterile environment is a necessity in most laboratories, in particular microbiology and medical labs.

Autoclaves, clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilization-in-place (SIP) systems, dry heat sterilizers and ovens, steam sterilizers, media sterilizers, and UV chambers all work to sterilize equipment and supplies.

What Are Different Types of Laboratory Sterilization Equipment?

Autoclaves sterilize equipment by subjecting it to pressurized steam for a set time, perhaps 20 min at 121 °C, 15 psig. Features to look for include automatic operation, easy-close door, and pre-vacuum cycles to remove air from the chamber. Dry heat sterilizers and ovens, which use hot air for sterilization, are particularly useful for sanitizing certain powders and oils.
