Electrospray Ionization Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer

Electrospray Ionization Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer
Electrospray ionization quadrupole mass spectrometers use electricity to force a sample, mixed with solvents, through a nozzle to form a spray, which is then analyzed. Electrospray ionization quadrupole mass spectrometry is especially useful in life sciences because it doesn't fragment large biological molecules like other forms of ionization do. The slower the flow rate through the electrosprayer, the smaller the droplets to be ionized. Microspray and nanospray are two types of electrospray ionization with slower flow rates. The electrospray ionization quadrupole mass spectrometer creates a spectrum based on the mass of the charged particles created by the ionizing process. Each spectrum is unique and so by comparing it with a standard reference, the analyte can be identified. Flow rate, sample size, and speed of analysis are three factors to consider when choosing an electrospray ionization quadrupole mass spectrometer.
