Oil In Water Analyzer

Monitoring the oil-in-water content is viable to optimize oil / water separation during oil production as well as minimize the environmental influence of discharged water. Most dedicated oil-in-water analyzers are based on a spectroscopic (e.g. infrared) measurement and an extraction of the inhomogeneous sample before the analysis with a nonpolar solvent. Outdated methods were mostly based on the use of environmentally harmful chlorinated and / or fluorinated solvents that have to be replaced by methods using environmentally friendlier solvents (e.g. ASTM D7678) by 2020 due to a ban of such solvents by the Montreal Protocol. Due to the nature of the sample all instruments report a so called “method defined parameter” which is defined by the sample, the reference substance and the used instrument (measurement principle). Results measured by different methods will differ, but correlate to each other.
