There are few industries where genotyping is more critical than in the commecial livestock industry; refining the desired traits of specific breeds, as well as controlling the spread of pathogens amongst dense populations, are all important for the satisfaction – and safety – of the consumer. Veterinary test kits utilize multiple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to determine parental lineage or identify both viral and bacterial present in animals. A test kit will usually be targeted toward a specific animal, and will amplify polymorphic tetranucleotide short tandem repeats that occur in the target species. In the case of microbial pathogens, these diagnostic kits are typically divided more broadly into viral and bacterial test platforms.
