Selects STaCS-CW Enterprise™ for its mitochondrial DNA laboratory
OTTAWA, December 12, 2012–STaCS DNA™ Inc., the only DNA sample processing software provider, today announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has selected STaCS DNA software for managing sample processing in its Mitochondrial DNA Unit (mtDNAU). STaCS DNA is the only provider of DNA sample processing software to the FBI, as the company’s software has previously been selected for its Nuclear DNA Unit (nDNAU) as well as for its Federal DNA Database unit (FDDU).
STaCS DNA is incorporating the specific workflows required by the FBI to analyze mitochondrial DNA into STaCS-CW Enterprise. The agency expects to roll-out STaCS-CW Enterprise for nuclear DNA in early 2013 and add mitochondrial DNA later in 2013.
“We have had a long-standing relationship with the FBI, lasting longer than a decade. The fact that the FBI uses STaCS® software for all of their DNA processing needs – nuclear, database and now mito – reinforces that we offer the gold standard for high volume DNA labs,” said Jocelyn Tremblay, STaCS DNA’s President and Chief Operating Officer.
Mitochondrial DNA testing is used to process highly degraded evidence samples that contain low concentrations of DNA, making them unsuitable for more routine nuclear DNA examinations. Mitochondrial testing may be used to determine a relationship between a missing person and a relative. Given its specialized nature, mitochondrial DNA testing is only performed at select public and private forensic labs.
The FDDU has been using STaCS-DB Enterprise™ since 2003. This high volume, high throughput DNA laboratory is projected to process more than 200,000 samples in 2013 and has the infrastructure to process 1,000,000 samples per year.
About STaCS DNA
STaCS DNA enables forensic laboratories to significantly accelerate their DNA sample throughput, allowing them to more effectively contribute to community safety. STaCS software works with a lab’s existing workflows–their LIMS, instruments and workloads–to blast through backlogs, increase lab integrity and decrease costs.
