22 May 2013: Malvern, UK: Dr Paul Kippax, Product Group Manager at Malvern Instruments and a specialist in particle characterization, is one of a panel of invited speakers at the first Particle Design Industrialization (PDI) Science workshop on Pharmaceutical Aerosols, to be held on June 24-25, 2013 at Hong Kong University. The workshop, which is affiliated to the inaugural Inhalation Asia Conference, will provide a broad-ranging introduction to the development of orally inhaled and nasal drug products (OINDPs) and will be delivered by a team of global experts. Dr Kippax will discuss how a range of complementary particle characterization techniques, including laser diffraction and particle imaging, can be used to gain comprehensive insight into OINDP performance and improve the efficiency of product development. The particle size and, increasingly, the particle shape of inhaled formulations is recognized as critical for successful drug delivery, making efficient particle characterization an important foundation for OINDP research. Dr Kippax will focus on the techniques of laser diffraction and particle imaging, showing how they can be applied alongside pharmacopoeial techniques, such as cascade impaction, to fully optimize devices and formulations for nasal and pulmonary drug delivery.
Laser diffraction is recommended by the regulators for nasal spray testing to assess quality, safety and efficacy. However, laser diffraction systems such as Malvern’s Spraytec measure up to 10,000 particle size distributions per second, allowing the real time evolution of particle size during a spray event to be tracked and providing detailed insight into the dynamics of particle behavior for all OINDPs.
Automated imaging systems, such as Malvern’s Morphologi G3, deliver statistically relevant particle shape information in minutes, allowing OINDP researchers to systematically and efficiently investigate the impact of particle shape on drug delivery. Combining particle imaging with Raman spectroscopy (Morphologi G3-ID) enables morphologically targeted chemical characterization, a powerful tool for identifying and analyzing active ingredients within an OINDP formulation.
Inhalation Asia is a new conference being run in partnership with the University of Hong Kong that reflects rapidly growing interest in OINDP development in the region. It will serve as a focal point for pulmonary drug delivery research and provide a platform for collaborative networking and the presentation of recent advances. The PDI Science workshop will run immediately ahead of Inhalation Asia as a practically focused workshop for those wishing to advance their basic understanding of OINDPs and how to develop them.
