27 June 2013: Malvern, UK: Experts from Malvern Instruments delivered a presentation focussing on the use of on-line zeta potential measurement in water purification as part of the 87th ACS 2013 Colloid & Surface Science Symposium, held at the University of California Riverside, USA, in June 2013. The talk highlighted new data detailing the application of Malvern¹s Zetasizer Nano system for process monitoring and coagulant dosage control in water treatment.
Zeta potential is a measure of the magnitude of the electrostatic repulsion or attraction between particles, and is one of the fundamental parameters known to affect stability. This correlation with dispersion stability has led to its widespread use in water treatment to monitor the tendency of particles in suspension to aggregate.
The Malvern presentation explored ways in which zeta potential is being used both on- and off-line to monitor and control the flocculation processes used to remove organic matter from raw water. Malvern's Dr Ana Morfesis presented case studies showing how water treatment plants in the US are using the Zetasizer Nano¹s on-line capabilities to troubleshoot purification processes, reduce chemical usage and simplify process operation.
