Xylem’s YSI product selected for prestigious Editor’s Choice Awards

BEVERLY, MA – (July 8, 2013) – Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL), a leading global water technology company focused on addressing the world’s most challenging water issues, announced today that its YSI brand NiCaVis® 700 Series IQ Sensor has been selected by Pollution Engineering magazine as an Editor’s Choice Award winner for 2013. The NiCaVis Sensor, used with the IQ SensorNet monitoring system claimed one of the top spots in the Waste category of products.

“Our primary goal at Xylem is to develop cutting edge, innovative products that address industry challenges and solve our customers’ water problems,” said Chris McIntire, senior vice president and president of Xylem Analytics. “To be recognized by an industry-leading publication when measured against so many great products from our peers makes this honor even more meaningful.” The NiCaVis UV sensor is used for measuring and controlling municipal wastewater processes. It can be placed at the influent, biological tank and/or effluent of a wastewater treatment plant to allow for accurate, real-time process monitoring and control. The rugged optical sensors with titanium housing, which can display up to 5 parameters, are used with the IQ SensorNet terminals. Data determination of measured values is done by spectral processing of the scanned UV-VIS spectrum - 256 wavelengths. Spectral nitrite, nitrate, and COD (chemical oxygen demand) as well as the other carbon parameters can be measured.

Unique features

Nitrite vs. Nitrate – High-precision spectral measurement determines and differentiates nitrite and nitrate concentrations, enabled by the measurement of 256 wavelengths in a range of 200-390 (wave length resolution >1 nm) which was not possible with the existing UV-VIS sensors (wave length range 200-720 nm). Potential interferences (e.g. nitrite or suspended solids) are detected based on the spectral information and automatically used for compensation.

Water Clarity – Capable of determining the clarity of the water. This feature is ideal for controlling UV lamps for disinfection at the end of the wastewater process, saving energy and extending the life of the lamps.

Ultrasonic cleaning – The UltraClean® ultrasound source is integrated in the sensor and generates high-frequency vibrations of the optical windows. Ultrasonic cleaning prevents initial biofouling and keeps any accumulation from taking place. Integrated air cleaning can also be used.

Measurement principle – The UV and UV/VIS sensors utilize a unique measuring principal that results in the measurement and reference channels aging at the same rate, removing the need for frequent re-zeroing and calibrations of the sensor.
