April 4, 2011, 2011, Billerica, MA - EMD Millipore, the Life Science division of Merck KGaA of Germany, today announced the next generation of its popular Scepter™ Handheld Automated Cell Counter. With the new Scepter 2.0 instrument, researchers can count a wide range of cell types quickly and accurately using a portable device.
Unlike automated benchtop counters that rely on vision-based detection, the Scepter instrument uses the Coulter Principle, which is capable of reliably detecting small cells (i.e., less than 7 µm in diameter). Small diameter cells?including red blood cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, certain neural cells, yeast, and human embryonic stem cells?are some of those most studied in disease-related and translational research.
Scepter cell counting has also been shown to be more precise than manual counting using a hemocytometer.
The Scepter 2.0 cell counter features powerful new software that allows researchers to compare sample sets using histogram overlays and multiparametric tables; save and create gating templates; and generate reports, graphs and tables.
Cell counting takes just 40 seconds, and the battery-operated, handheld instrument can be used anywhere in the laboratory or under a tissue culture hood.
"We had been looking for an easier, more streamlined method to assess cell size parameters," said Dr. Brad Olson, a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk institute. "The Scepter cell counter allowed us to accurately discriminate size differences for our cells."
The Scepter cell counter is for research use only. It is not intended for use in diagnostic or medical applications.
