Pittcon 2012 Offers Free Educational Support to Central Florida Teachers, Students

Pittsburgh, Pa. (January 31, 2012) - The Pittcon Organizing Committee is pleased to announce outreach to and free support of programs for Central Florida teachers, students and science educators at Pittcon 2012 in Orlando, Fla., at the Orange County Convention Center March 11-15, 2012 with its Science Week program. Pittcon's Science Week program supports and enhances science education with a variety of opportunities, including teacher workshops, a science lecture and demonstration, student workshops and a special grant opportunity.

Lee Marek will present this year's science lecture and demonstration, "Weird Science on Fuels and Energy," for high school students on March 15, 2012 from 10 a.m. to noon. Marek is a nationally recognized science demonstrator and educator from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The program will feature science education presented in a manner guaranteed to attract and hold attention of attendees. Space is limited and selection of schools will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Science Week student workshops will be offered March 12 through March 14, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and include five workshops. Each workshop will provide hands-on learning activities and experiments for elementary and middle school students in the areas of acids and bases, electrochemistry, polymers and more. Please check availability here before making selections.

Teacher workshops held on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11, 2012 are specific to elementary, middle and high school science. Registrants for workshops will receive supplies and materials so they can immediately implement principles and activities demonstrated. Registration is limited for all workshops and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Free lunch will be provided for teachers attending all-day workshops. Parking is also included.

Attendance at one or more teacher workshop(s) entitles an attendee to apply for a Science Week Grant to purchase science-related teaching materials for his/her school. Grants may be as much as $500 to $1,000 each to any school within a 150-mile radius of Orlando with a student registration over 200.
