High-Speed Camera Advances Bio-Hybrid Fuel Research

Researchers at the University of Aachen Fuel Science Center (FSC) aim to integrate renewable electricity by utilizing bio-based carbon feedstocks and CO2 to provide high-density liquid energy carriers or bio-hybrid fuels. By utilizing the Kirana Ultra High-Speed camera, the researchers will be able to visualize and improve their understanding of the transient processes behind the electro-catalytic injection, mixture formation and combustion of bio-hybrid fuels.

High-speed cameras have been utilized in the automotive fuel combustion field but are limited in their ability to resolve very fast processes. The Kirana Ultra High-Speed camera, developed by Specialised Imaging, helps researchers surpass this limitation by being capable of 180 consecutive high-quality images at frame rates of up to 5 MHz. The full resolution of the Kirana camera is maintained independently of its frame rate, allowing high spatial and temporal resolution at the same time. The Kirana’s operational flexibility and ease of use enable researchers to record and deliver slow-motion video images in just about any material scientific research application.
