Normal pipettes and pipetting techniques are often not up to the task of accurately measuring and dispensing liquids with high-viscosity. Viscous liquid pipettes are designed specifically with thick liquids in mind. These pipettes, which are also called positive displacement pipettes, have specialized tips which contain a piston that comes into direct contact with the sample and allows the aspiration force to remain constant and tip to fill easily. This is in contrast to relying on a pocket of air to dispense the liquid as in the case of standard pipettes.
