Western blotting is a commonly used analytical technique that allows researchers to separate and identify proteins from a cellular sample and confirm protein-modifications. The proteins are separated from a mixture according to their molecular weight then transferred to a support, usually a membrane/film, and the targeted protein is then marked with antibodies for visualization. Related techniques include dot blot and immunohistochemistry.
Applications of western blot include after cloning confirmation of protein production, BSE-Test for HIV diagnosis, as well as the detection of other ailments such as Lyme Disease and Hepatitis B.
