Virtual Microscope Images Just A Touch Away with Olympus OlyVIA® Mobile iPad® App

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., November 11, 2013 – Researchers and educators who use images captured in the Olympus virtual slide format (.vsi) will soon be able to gain access to their entire library of virtual microscope images from anywhere in the world with a mere tap of the finger, thanks to the new OlyVIA Mobile iPad App, a free download from the Apple Store/iTunes®. The app is designed for use with images captured with Olympus imaging systems, including the Olympus VS120® virtual slide system, and shared with others by using Olympus Net Image ServerSQL v.2.7 software. In addition toVS120 images, any image captured in or converted into the .vsi file format, including images from cellSens® or Stream® software, will be able to be uploaded via Net Image Server and viewed on an iPad.

“With a click, a tap or a finger pinch, users can verify, select, pan, zoom, observe their virtual images at different magnifications” said Pia Rinta-Panttila, product manager at Olympus. “The OlyVIA Mobile application makes the most of both the familiar user-friendliness and portability of the iPad and the extraordinary image quality of the Olympus VS120 system to provide a robust and pleasant user experience.” Users who download the free app will also have access to a library of brilliant, detailed microscope slides – digitally captured brightfield, fluorescence and darkfield virtual specimen images that can be used for demonstration or educational purposes.

The modular Olympus VS120 virtual slide system creates high-resolution digital images of complete microscope specimens that can be stored on a server for simultaneous viewing anywhere in the world, at a range of magnifications. The system is designed to provide outstanding brightfield, darkfield and fluorescence performance, combined with precise color rendition and scanning. The VS120 earned three First Place awards at the biennial International Scanner Contest (ISC) in 2012, in the important categories of Color and Precision, Fluorescence 20x and Fluorescence 40x. The VS120 also earned two awards at the first ISC, which took place in Berlin in 2010.
