Pharmaceutical Materials Verification through the Container

Cobalt Light Systems has launched a new system for incoming materials verification that works through unopened containers. RapID uses a unique technology that verifies the identity of materials through paper, plastic, glass and other non-transparent containers commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry in seconds. It enables a significant increase in testing throughput of incoming goods whilst reducing dependence on powder sampling booths and wet chemistry testing.

RapID is able to verify materials through paper, plastic and multi-layer sacks, coloured and clear glass, such as Winchester containers, and opaque plastic tubs in only 1-10 seconds. The underlying technology extends the power of Raman spectroscopy to these sorts of challenging containers using a technique called Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS). SORS captures high quality Raman spectra of a sample through many millimetres of opaque or clear container without needing to know anything about the nature of the container. The material is verified using its Raman spectrum, which is able to differentiate thousands of raw materials.

With a rugged construction RapID is designed for routine use and is both quick and easy to train for new materials. With barcode scanning to identify the material for test and quick measurement times, typically significantly less than 10 seconds, large numbers of samples can be tested efficiently and accurately. Assuming a 100% inspection requirement, 100 sacks could be verified in around 15 minutes without being removed from the pallet. Using alternate technology where sampling is required takes significantly longer – perhaps days – and require an additional testing step.

Darren Andrews, Business Development Director at Cobalt said, “This is a completely new approach to the problem of materials verification. It combines the practicality and familiarity of Raman spectroscopy for analysis with an effective way of tackling the problem of measuring through containers. This is really exciting for our customers because nothing else on the market offers this ability.

RapID is designed entirely for the pharmaceutical industry and complies with relevant regulatory guidelines, such as 21CFR part 11.

RapID is available to pharmaceutical customers for demonstration. For more information or a demonstration please contact
