Teledyne CETAC Introduces Automated Solution for Oil Sample Dilution

The ASTM D518 and ASTM D4951 methods for oil analysis both require that samples be diluted by weight. Teledyne CETAC Technologies has recently launched the new APS-7650G Gravimetric Sample Prep Station, an automated solution that aims to streamline this dilution process and save analysts’ time by reducing manual steps. The APS-7650G automated system for oil sample dilution includes an integrated pipettor and balance and can hold up to three racks of samples, or 180 samples total, for dilutions of 10-100x.

APS-7650G automatically adjusts for sample viscosity while dispensing and also includes a customizable vortex mixer for homogenizing samples. The automated pipettor incorporates drip retention technology and uses a fresh pipette for every dilution in order to prevent carryover, cross contamination and spills. The system records sample data that can be directly imported into ICP software and also utilizes Teledyne’s OilEase software that allows users to create custom methods for specific samples in a sequence.

The instrument can handle sample viscosities up to 1000 cSt and offers an accuracy down to ± 0.1 mg, according to Teledyne CETAC. The system supports RS-232 and USB interfaces for data transfer and can import and export SIF, XLSX and CSV file formats. Designed to support analyses in the new oils market, where samples must be tested to ensure appropriate additive levels and overall cleanliness before leaving the production facility, the APS-7650G system meets ASTM D5185 and D4951 requirements for sample preparation prior to ICP-OES analysis.

“The APS-7650G is a new solution that has been lacking for many years. This system saves users time because it allows for automation of the overall process, which frees users up for other things thus improving the overall workflow in the laboratory,” said Jacob Herrington, Teledyne CETAC Technical Product Manager for Automation, in a statement. “The APS-7650G allows people to be people and solve problems and let robots do the robotic work.”
