A GPC viscometer measures the viscosity of a solution relative to an application-specific solvent alone. This is typically achieved by pushing a reference solvent and a sample solution through narrow capillaries and monitoring for changes in pressure. One benefit of using a GPC viscosity detector instead of other conventional size exclusion chromatography techniques without an online viscometer is that they can allow for a more accurate determination of molecular weights by applying the Universal Calibration, which can be accomplished regardless of the sample and calibration matrices. The most common and widely used viscometer design is the 4 capillary bridge design; however, certain applications may require a different viscometer design type.
