Viscometers are used to determine the viscosity of a fluid under specific flow and atmospheric
conditions. Viscometers are used for a range of applications including product development, research
and quality control. There are several types of viscometers, including rotational, capillary, falling
ball (sphere), and kreb, among others. Each type of viscometer can come in several formats. For
example, a viscometer may come in a digital or analog format and there are handheld, bench top and
inline configurations. Rotational viscometers may come with a cone and plate, or with a spindle.
Viscometers are designed with a purpose based on configuration along with other key specifications such
as viscosity range (low, medium and high), and sample size. Together, these specifications determine
the type of material that can be tested, depth of analysis, and throughput. For testing small samples
of adhesives, creams, or varnishes, consider a bench top rotational viscometer with a medium viscosity
range. (Viscosity range determinations will vary by manufacturer.)
