Femtosecond Laser / Pulsed Lasers

Femtosecond lasers are capable of emitting extremely short optical pulses with time durations all the way down to the femtosecond (10–5) level. These ultrashort pulses (which are in contrast to the output of continuous-mode lasers) are usually achieved through the technique of mode locking, resulting in high optical power. Like lasers in general, femtosecond lasers in particular find use across a broad spectrum of applications: biological imaging, materials processing, micromachining, laser-induced fluorescence, and various spectroscopy techniques, to name a few.

What to consider when choosing a femtosecond/pulsed laser?

The main choice to be made is the type of laser, with available types ranging from solid-state lasers including Ti:Sapphire and Nd:YAG to gas, excimer, fiber, and pulsed dye lasers in different bandwidths. In terms of important parameters, wavelength, pulse duration, repetition rate, and pulse energy are key.
