Electron Ionization Mass Spectrometer (EI MS)

An electron ionization mass spectrometer is a machine that analyzes samples by measuring it's component's mass-to-charge ratios. Useful in environmental sciences to detect and identify pollutants and in chemical labs to analyze samples or determine purity, electron ionization mass spectrometers identify components of a sample by using their mass-to-charge ratios. In order to analyze a sample, it is vaporized and then an electron beam is focused on the vapor, to create ions from the samples atoms and/or molecules. The mass is measure by how far the ion travels and that data is converted into a spectrum that is unique to each compound. Because mass spectrometry destroys the sample, it is important that you know the sample volume needed for a given electron ionization mass spectrometer. Sensitivity levels and speed of analysis can also differ from one spectrometer to another.
