With higher levels of magnification than stereo microscopes, a compound microscope uses a compound lens to view specimens which cannot be seen at lower magnification, such as cell structures, blood, or water organisms. These microscopes have multiple lenses with a magnification range of up to 1000x (but generally 10X, 40x and 100x) which produces two-dimensional images, unlike stereo microscopes which are lower magnification and produce three-dimensional images. Samples are prepared on a slide which is then held on the microscopic stage where a light is directed through the sample.
A compound microscope can come in several types such as biological microscopes, polarizing microscopes, phase contrast microscopes, or florescence microscopes with uses varying for each. When choosing a compound microscope, things to consider are magnification power, application, and whether to get a monocular, binocular, trinocular microscope.
