Spectroscopy is widely used in the petrochemical, biochemical and pharmaceutical industries to rapidly identify substances or to test the purity of products without physically destroying or altering samples. Electron spin resonance spectrometers, or electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometers, are especially suited for chemicals containing unpaired electrons, such as organic or inorganic free-radicals, or compounds with transition metal ions. Instead of affecting fluorescence or vibration, EPS/ESR spectrometers use photons to excite the spin of electrons. A benchtop EPS/ESR spectrometer will typically operate at anywhere from 3.4 to 9.5 GHz, and can operate within temperature ranges as wide as -170 to 200 degrees C. Scan ranges can exceed 500 mT.
