Successful Conference For Porous Materials Characterization Bridges Academia and Industry.

Organizers thank presenters and attendees for making CPM-6 a huge success.

Boynton Beach, Florida,  June 9 , 2012.-The 6th International Workshop "Characterization of Porous Materials: from Angstroms to Millimeters" – CPM-6, proudly sponsored by Quantachrome Instruments of Boynton Beach, was successfully held at the Delray Beach Marriott hotel in Delray Beach, Florida, USA, April 30 – May 2, 2012. It attracted participants from 24 countries representing six continents and so CPM-6 became one of the largest international events in the subject area in 2012.

After five previous meetings in New Jersey this international conference came to South Florida for the first time, and was jointly chaired by Prof. Alexander Neimark from Rutgers University, who started this successful conference series 15 years ago, and Quantachrome Instruments’ Director of Applied Science, Dr. Matthias Thommes. Designed to serve a bridge between academia and industry, CPM Workshops have gained an international reputation for their high-quality interdisciplinary program, interactive style of presentations, and vivid discussions.

The Workshop program included eight invited lectures, 37 oral presentations plus 90 posters, and covered theoretical, simulation, and experimental approaches to the characterization of structural, fluid transport, and functional properties of porous materials of various origins. The range of pore structures - regular, disordered, and hierarchical nanostructured materials – span a wide range of practical applications including adsorbents, catalysts, pharmaceuticals, biomaterials, membranes, and batteries. In addition to the session program, Quantachrome Instruments hosted two much-appreciated social events after the conclusion of the workshop on Wednesday afternoon, May 2nd: a guided tour of the recently expanded and refurbished Quantachrome facilities in Boynton Beach by approximately 75 visitors, followed by an evening intracoastal waterway cruise aboard the "Lady Atlantic" by more than one hundred of the attendees plus guests.

On Thursday, May 3, a special forum of thirty invited VIP specialists from academia and industry met at Quantachrome for a special Forum in which “Bridging Fundamentals with Practice” and associated challenges were discussed. Prof. Alex Neimark is a member of the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers State University of New Jersey. His research interests include nanostructured and porous materials and their characterization by adsorption and other techniques, statistical mechanics and molecular modeling of nanophases and of interactions of fluids with nanomaterials including interfacial thermodynamics and hydrodynamics. He came to the USA in 1994 to join the Chemical Engineering Department at Yale University, and from 2000-2006 was Director of Research at the Textile Research Institute in Princeton, NJ, before joining Rutgers.

Dr. Matthias Thommes (Quantachrome's Director of Applied Science) is a renowned researcher in the area of adsorption and characterization of nanoporous materials. He joined Quantachrome in the USA in 2001. Dr. Thommes has authored/co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and book chapters, is a Visiting Professor at University of Edinburgh, U.K, and is active as a member of a number of leading and authoritative bodies in his field: Board of Directors of the International Adsorption Society (IAS), Council Member of the International Mesostructured Materials Association (IMMA, 2006-2010), Advisory Board of the journal Particle & Particle Systems Characterization, Chairman of the new IUPAC (International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry) Task Group – “Physisorption of Gases, with Special Reference to the Evaluation of Surface Area and Pore Size Distributions”. He is also Convener of the International Standard Organization (ISO) Working Group on Surface Area and Porosity.
