The Center for Nutrition, Learning, and Memory, a collaboration between Abbott’s nutrition business and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), has issued their annual call for research proposals involving innovative scientific research relating to nutrition’s role in learning and memory. Preproposals for the second annual research challenge are due Sept. 7, 2012 (note: three months earlier than the previous preproposal deadline). This is the second year of the Center’s annual research challenge. Funding will be determined by a joint committee consisting of UIUC and Abbott members and will be announced no later than Dec. 17, 2012.
While primary investigators must have their primary appointments at UIUC, interested researchers are encouraged to discuss and establish research relationships with UIUC faculty through whom funding can be requested. Current project teams include more than 45 UIUC faculty researchers, associates from seven Illinois colleges, and collaborators from eight national and international research facilities. Research is being conducted across 16 departments on the UIUC campus, along with two world-renowned research institutes: the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Institute for Genomic Biology.
In 2012, approximately $10 million in research funding was awarded to interdisciplinary research projects involving nutrition, the brain and cognition. Funded research impacts several project categories, including interventional, correlational, model and tool development and core facilities. Studies underway are researching the impact of various nutrients and overall nutrition on learning and memory across the lifespan in both healthy and diseased populations.
